Sylvia A. Earle

World-renowned marine biologist, explorer, author, and lecturer

Dr. Sylvia A. Earle– called “Her Deepness” by the New Yorker and the New York Times, “Living Legend” by the Library of Congress, and first “Hero for the Planet” by Time Magazine– is an oceanographer, explorer, author, and lecturer with experience as a field research scientist, government official, and director for corporate and non-profit organizations. She has led more than 100 expeditions and logged more than 7,500 hours underwater including leading the first team of women aquanauts during the Tektite Project in 1970, participating in ten saturation dives, most recently in July 2012, and setting a record for solo diving in 1,000 meters depth.

Glen Curado

Founder and CEO of World Harvest Charities and Family Services

Conservation Heroes are chosen for their demonstrated passion for the planet and for their tireless work in a number of areas such as mitigating the loss of wildlife, helping to curb climate change and practicing sustainability. This year we honor Glen Curado of World Harvest Charities and Family Services. Mr. Curado spends his life helping those less fortunate in our city through food programs focused on sustainability and zero waste and he provides the Los Angeles Zoo with tens of thousands of dollars of free produce every month.

Connie Morgan

Former President of the Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association

Recognizing Connie Morgan’s 16-year tenure as President of the Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association, which was marked by major increases in the zoo’s visibility, programming, attendance and earned revenue.  Morgan was named President of GLAZA, the city-owned Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens’ nonprofit partner, in November 2002. She has directed teams charged with management of annual and capital fundraising, marketing, membership, publications, volunteer and retail and food concessions programs for the benefit of the Zoo. Under her leadership, key GLAZA funding for the Los Angeles Zoo’s major capital projects and campus programming has ensured the advancement of the Zoo as a major conservation organization.

Duff Goldman

Food Network star and chef/owner of Charm City Cakes

Duff Goldman is a chef, artist, entrepreneur and TV personality. Duff’s first major foray into television was on the hit Food Network show Ace of Cakes, which took place in his famed Baltimore bakery, Charm City Cakes. The show ran for ten seasons, achieving the rare feat of airing over 100 episodes. Duff has recently starred in several new shows on Food Network, including Cake Masters, the Baking Championship series, Dessert Games and Buddy vs. Duff, which is currently airing.

For more than fifty years, the private, nonprofit Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association (GLAZA) has funded exhibits, plant and animal species conservation, capital projects, and education and community outreach programs at the Los Angeles Zoo, an international leader in the preservation of endangered species and a conservation center for the care and study of wildlife. There are currently over 61,600 GLAZA member households, the largest membership base of a cultural organization in Los Angeles, and it boasts a volunteer corps of over 700.
